3 to the 100th power

What number is in the ones digit when you simplify 3 to the 100th power?

  1. I think the answer is 3. 3 x 3 x .... x 3 = y, with y being the product of 3 multiplied by itself 100 times. The value of y does not matter because you said to simplify 3 to the 100th power. If I do that I get 3^100, which puts a 3 in the ones space, with 100 as an exponent. So, unless I seriously misunderstood the question, the answer is 3.

  2. Impressive answer! I should have been more clear. I am suggesting that 3^1 simplified is 3, 3^2 simplified is 9, 3^3 simplified is 27 etc. 3^100 simplified is to large for the calculators we use at school to display on the screen. This can be done quickly without the use of a calculator. Analyze your answers from 3^1 through 3^8 and a pattern should jump out at you.
